September 2017 ACF and FIDE Ratings
The September 2017 ACF and FIDE ratings have been posted on the Ratings page. All CAWA members can view their ACF ratings, and SSCC members can also find their FIDE ratings there.
2017 Kingsley Open - date change
The CAWA-run Kingsley Open will now be run on 21st and 22nd October, rather than the originally planned weekend of 14th and 15th October.

2017 Willetton Open Results
Simul: IM Temur Kuybokarov
The simultaneous display given by IM Temur Kuybokarov attracted a fair degree of interest, with 23 players participating and many spectators turning out to watch the event. The Uzbek IM was undefeated, impressively winning 20 games and being held to only 3 draws (Yita Choong, Andrew Hardegen, Peter de Yaak). Well done to all!
2017 SSCC Winter Blitz Tournament
The Winter Blitz Tournament (Tuesday 8th August) was contested by 16 players and was won by Michael Horstmann. The tournament crosstable, full list of prizewinners, and the current SSCC Blitz Championship Standings can all be found on the Blitz Championship page.
2017 Harris Edwardes Interclub Competition
The 2017 Harris Edwardes Interclub Competition is now complete, with Southern Suburbs Chess Club teams winning all 3 divisions! This year's competition was one of the largest in recent memory with 10 teams -- 5 from Southern Suburbs Chess Club, 3 from Perth Chess Club, 1 from Metro Chess Club and 1 from Kingsley Junior Chess Club.

2017 WA Championship
The 2017 WA Championship is now finished. Congratulations to Igor Butsenko, who won the Closed Championship with 5.5/7 and is the 2017 WA Chess Champion!
Three other SSCC players participated in the WA Closed Championship: Tim Hare (4.5/7), Andrew Hardegen (3.5/7) and Ihsan Ferozkohi (3/7).
The Reserves Championship was won by Craig Kinsman (6.5/7).
2017 SSCC Fischerandom Championship

July 2017 FIDE Ratings
The July 2017 FIDE ratings have been released.
Divisions A and B of the SSCC Round-Robin were rated in this list. Four SSCC players -- Edward Calado, Kim Fong, George France and Stan Mott -- have obtained new FIDE ratings. This brings to 8 the number of SSCC members who have obtained new FIDE ratings since the start of the year.

2017 South-West Open Results
WA Lightning Championship
The 2017 State Lightning Championship was held at Leeming Primary School on the 23rd of April.
Congratulations to FM Tristan Boyd (9.0/11) -- 2017 WA Lightning Champion, WFM Kathryn Hardegen (5.5/11) -- 2017 WA Women's Lightning Champion, and Craig Kinsman (6.5/11) -- 2017 WA Seniors' Lightning Champion.
We were pleased to welcome IM Temur Kuybokarov to the WA chess scene! Temur, from Uzbekistan, is already well-known in Australia, being a joint winner of the 2017 Australian Open. Temur will be residing in WA for around 12 months. We hope he participates in many more tournaments while he is here, particularly the upcoming WA Championship.
The tournament was not only stronger than many other WA events, as we have come to expect with WA Lightning Championships, but also well attended. Well done to all 34 players for making this tournament a very successful one.

2017 Gufeld Cup Results
The 2017 Gufeld Cup was played over 2 days on the Easter weekend. Many regular local players were absent: the long weekend, school holidays, and clash with the Doeberl Cup may all have contributed to this. Nevertheless, all of those who could attend seemed to enjoy themselves.
SSCC players Andrew Hardegen and Ignatius Yap shared 1st place together with Gordon Dunlop on 4.5/6. 1st Under 1700 with 3.5/6 was Australind junior and current WA Country Champion, Ramudu Rathnayake. 2nd Under 1700 with 3.0/6 was another SSCC member, Sebastian Vearncombe. Sri Krishna Dharmapuri (3.5/6) won the junior prize.

2017 WA Secondary Students' Championship
Following the Primary Students' Championship, the WA Secondary Students' Championship was played at Leeming Primary School on 11th-12th April. The event was contested by 40 players from 13 schools, with many of WA's top young players taking part.
Congratulations to Patrick Gong (1st Under 18: 6/6), Safiyya Aljunied (1st Under 16: 5/6), and Ignatius Yap (2nd Under 18: 5/6), and to Leeming Senior High School for winning the Schools' Trophy.
Thanks go to the arbiters, Darrian Low & George Carolin-Unkovich, and to everyone who helped to promote and run this highly successful event.

2017 WA Primary Students' Championship
This event was played at Leeming Primary School on Sunday 9th April: 57 players participated.
Congratulations to Pranav Senthil Kumar (1st: 9/9), Kundan Dharmapuri (2nd: 8/9), Vinura Elvadura (1st Under 10 and 3rd: 7/9), and to SSJCC player Yonal De Vas Gunawardhana, who at age 6 was not only one of the youngest participants, but also scored an amazing 6.0/9 to win the 1st Under 8 trophy and finish =5th overall.
Congratulations also go to Yita Choong for successfully organising and running one of the largest CAWA junior tournaments in recent memory. Thanks go to Ben Dagza and Dante Osorio for their help on the day, and to our host, Leeming Primary School, for providing extra tables and chairs at short notice.

Congratulations to WFM-elect Kathryn Hardegen
The 2017 Oceania Zonal Championships, held in Auckland NZ, concluded on 20th January. In the Women's Championship, Kathryn Hardegen finished =2nd with 6.5/9 (+5, =3, -1) and was the only player to defeat the eventual winner, Layla Timergazi. Kathryn's score and placing will see her receive the Women's FIDE Master title and a 9-game Women's International Master norm.

2017 Australian Open Chess Championships
The 2017 Australian Open Chess Championships are underway. Over 100 players are participating in the main event, which features many strong Australian and overseas players. WA is being represented by Patrick Gong, Tristan Boyd, Yita Choong and Richard Lilly.

Ignatius Yap at 2nd Singapore Amateur Chess Championships 2016
The 2nd Singapore Amateur Chess Championships (all players rated under 2000) were held from 17th-23rd December 2016. The tournament attracted a strong field with 192 competitors. Congratulations go to WA's Ignatius Yap who was the top-placed Australian player, scoring an excellent 6.0/9 to finish =21st.
2016 SSCC Christmas Blitz Tournament
The club's final event of the year, 2016 SSCC Christmas Blitz Tournament, was played on 13th December and was won by Ihsan Ferozkohi and Michael Horstmann! Congratulations to Ihsan, Michael and to the other prizewinners: Adam Kelly, Dennis Holland, Colin Koehler, Saminda De Vas Gunawardhana, Simon Ayling, George France, Ian McAteer and Victor Sun. Congratulations to Patrick Gong - WA's newest FIDE Master
Patrick Gong has fulfilled the requirements of the coveted FIDE Master (FM) title, having attained a live FIDE rating of 2300 or above. Patrick achieved this feat at the 2016 Lidums Young Masters in Adelaide, which finished today. The premier section of this event was a 10-player tournament which featured 6 of Australia's strongest players aged under 25, together with 4 overseas players.
Patrick scored an exceptional 5/9 in the event, achieving wins against IM James Morris (2457), IM Kanan Izzat (2456) and FM Yi Liu (2311), and drawing with GM Adrien Demuth (2546), FM Yeoh Li Tian (2432), FM Liu Xiangyi (2431) and FM Zachary Loh (2340). He very nearly attained his maiden IM norm.
Our congratulations go to Patrick: he is a truly deserving recipient of the FM title.
Two supporting events ran alongside the Young Masters. These were the Junior Masters (Open) and the Junior Masters (Under 1600). The latter event was contested by one of our club players, 9-year-old Alex Pimenov, who scored an excellent 4.5/9.

2016 Lidums Young Masters
2016 Christmas Open
The 2016 Christmas Open was held at Wesley College on 5th and 6th December, immediately following the Australian Schools Team Championships which were held at the same venue on 3rd and 4th December.
The tournament attracted a strong field of 42 participants, comprising 22 players from WA and 20 players from Queensland and Victoria who were already in Perth for the Schools Team Championships.
Congratulations to the winners: FM Tristan Boyd (WA) and IM Ari Dale (VIC) who both scored 5.5/6. Several SSCC players competed: congratulations to Andrey Lugovskoy (3.5/6) for sharing 1st prize in the `Under 1750' rating class, and to Victor Sun (2.5/6) for finishing equal 2nd in the `Under 1000 and Unrated' class.

2016 SSCC Annual General Meeting
The 2016 SSCC AGM was held on 29th November. Minutes of the meeting and the President's and Treasurer's annual reports can be viewed on the Minutes page. The composition of the new SSCC Council for 2017 is detailed on the SSCC Council page.
Kathryn Hardegen has voluntarily stepped down as SSCC Treasurer. Kathryn had been Treasurer since the club's outset, and her 2 years in the job have led the club into a sound financial position. We owe Kathryn a debt of gratitude for her excellent budgetary management and careful record-keeping, which has enabled revenue and expenditure to be monitored and modelled. Kathryn retains the position of Vice-President of the club.
Adam Bonneville will be the new club Treasurer. Adam has also been appointed to the new position of Library Officer. The club's library will open in 2017.
Dennis Holland will also be joining us on the SSCC Council, having offered to serve as one of the club's arbiters in 2017.

Queen of Katwe -- Blitz Tournament
The film Queen of Katwe will open at Grand Cinemas in Currambine on 1st December. The CAWA will be promoting the film by hosting a blitz tournament in the main foyer of the cinema. This tournament will be on Saturday 10th December, from 1:00pm until 4:00pm. Entry fee is by gold coin donation: all entry monies will be given to a charity to be selected by the cinema. Prizes may include movie passes, chess equipment, and a trophy for the winner.
There is no entry form for the tournament. To enter, contact Norbert Muller (9409 9579) and pay on the day.
A handful of double passes to the film are available free of charge, but these will not last long. Contact Norbert if you would like one.
Members of the CAWA are also invited to the preview screening of the film, at 6:45pm on Monday 28th November.

Leeming Primary School - Chess Team Fundraiser
A chess team from Leeming Primary School will be travelling to Melbourne to represent WA at the ChessKids National Schools Championships, which will be held on November 28-29. The players' parents will be shouldering 50% of the expenses of the trip. The school will contribute the remaining 50%. A fundraiser is underway to help offset the cost to Leeming Primary School: see https://www.gofundme.com/leeming-primary-chess-team-trip-2udwbqs for details. Contributions of any amount will be greatly appreciated. Please consider donating to help the school chess team participate in this event.
Harris Edwardes Interclub Competition
The Harris Edwardes Interclub Competition was played on Sundays 9th and 16 October. Southern Suburbs Chess Club entered 5 teams in this year's event: 2 teams in Division A, 2 teams in Division B and 1 team in Division C. Perth Chess Club entered 3 teams -- one in each division. Metropolitan Chess Club entered 1 team in Division A but did not contest the other divisions.
Our teams were once again able to win both Divisions A and B. We narrowly lost out to Perth Chess Club by 2.5 matches to 1.5 in Division C. Well done to our club's players, who all performed admirably:

SSCC Spring Blitz Tournament
The Spring Blitz Tournament (Tuesday 20th September) was contested by 16 players. Congratulations to the winners: Igor Butsenko and Ihsan Ferozkohi. This result means that Ihsan is again the SSCC Blitz Champion in 2016, having achieved strong results in each of the 4 Blitz Championship events.

SSCC Rapidplay Championship
The SSCC Rapidplay Championship concluded on Tuesday 6th September and was won by Andrew Hardegen (7.0/8), with Ihsan Ferozkohi and Colin Koehler sharing 2nd place (6.0/8). The final tournament crosstable and the full list of prizewinners are provided on the 2016 SSCC Rapidplay Championship page.
42nd Chess Olympiad - Baku, Azerbaijan
The 2016 Chess Olympiad is underway. This is a biennial tournament which features teams from all over the world, with 891 players competing in the Open section and 708 in the Women's section.
The tournament will run from 2nd September until 13th September. There is one round on each day, except for the rest day (7th September). All rounds start at 15:00 AZST (19:00 Perth time), except for the final round on 13th September which begins at 11:00 AZST (15:00 Perth time).

Three players from the club received new ACF ratings from tournaments completed in the September quarter: Igor Butsenko, Poupak Mohammadi, and Alexander Tufekcic. Poupak Mohammadi and Nedeljko Tomic received new FIDE ratings in the August 2016 FIDE list.
WA Junior Allegro Championship
The WA Junior Allegro Chess Championship was held at Leeming Primary School on Sunday 28th August.

SSCC members Pranav and Raghav Senthil Kumar performed strongly. Pranav (6.0/9) shared the Under 12 prize with Ben Hurst and finished equal 3rd overall, while Raghav (5.0/9) shared the Under 10 prize with Alex Pimenov and Kundan Dharmapuri.

2016 Willetton Open

SSCC Winter Blitz Tournament
The Winter Blitz Tournament (Tuesday 9th August) was contested by 18 players and was won by Michael Horstmann. The tournament crosstable, full list of prizewinners, and the current SSCC Blitz Championship Standings can all be found on the Blitz Championship page.
The SSCC Rapidplay Championship will begin on Tuesday 16th August!
WA Junior Championships
The 2016 WA Junior Championships were held at Leeming Primary School from the 11th to the 14th of April. 12 members of SSCC and SSJCC were among the 48 competitors.
Ignatius Yap successfully defended his title, becoming WA Junior Champion for a third time. Pranav Senthil Kumar won both the U/14 and U/12 Championships. The U/10 Championship was won by Raghav Senthil Kumar. Congratulations to Ignatius, Pranav and Raghav on their outstanding achievements!
