Southern Suburbs Chess Club

Welcome to our website!

Southern Suburbs Chess Club, established in December 2014, is one of Perth's largest chess clubs. We organise and run ACF- and FIDE-rated chess tournaments for the benefit of Perth chess players, with a view to raising the profile of our game in WA.

Our club has players of all ages. Our members range in playing strength from beginners up to leading WA players, including current and past WA Champions and WA Junior Champions in various age groups.

Southern Suburbs Chess Club is affiliated with the Chess Association of WA. Because of this, our players receive CAWA membership on joining the club, allowing them to participate in adult and junior tournaments run by the CAWA.

We support the development of junior chess by running the Southern Suburbs Junior Chess Club. This club provides fun and engaging classes for relatively new junior players. Older, more experienced juniors are encouraged to join the adult club.

Our club also competes in the Harris Interclub Competition run by the CAWA. Our club teams have won the Open Division on six occasions (2015-2020), the B Division (all players rated under 1950) for the past 7 years, and the C Division (all players rated under 1550) on 4 separate occasions.

Whether you are an SSCC member or an interested newcomer, here you will find all the information that you are looking for: club location and meeting times, tournament results, information about upcoming events, contact details for club officers, and more.

Visitors are always welcome at SSCC. If you are interested in chess and haven't been to the club before, feel free to drop in on a Tuesday evening to say hello, enjoy a cup of coffee, and have a few games with some of our club players.

2022 CAWA Perth Open

Posted: 15/2/2022

The 2022 CAWA Perth Open was played on 12th and 13th February. A number of SSCC members participated in this event. The longer time control (60 minutes + 30 seconds per move) and the advertised prize fund of $2,400 were successful in attracting a large field of 43 players, with all rating divisions being well represented. The tournament benefited from the participation of GM Temur Kuybokarov, who is to be congratulated for winning the tournament with a score of 6.0/6.

For a full report on this tournament, see the CAWA website.

The changes made to the running of the Perth Open in 2022 may be just the first steps in a process that CAWA hopes will raise significantly the profile of this tournament. With continued support, the tournament may evolve into a major event on the Australian chess calendar. I thank the players, the CAWA Council, and everyone who contributed to the success of the 2022 Perth Open.
